In 2014, I worked as one of the lead mammal scientists for Operation Wallacea’s expedition to Calakmul Biosphere Reserve (Reserva de la Biósfera Calakmul) in the Yucutan Peninsula, close to the border with Guatemala. This is ‘dry’ tropical forest – it has distinct dry and wet seasons, unlike rainforest.
Calakmul is a blanket of hot green with Mayan ruins poking through the treetops. Jaguars swagger across this forest, and colourful birds, noisy frogs, hostile monkeys and throbbing insects watch them with care.
